Safe payment over the internet: MasterCard SecureCode
MasterCard SecureCode is the name for an extra-safe method of payment over the internet. With MasterCard SecureCode you make internet purchases with an extra password. This uses so-called '3D secure' technology. From June 2009 you may be asked for your MasterCard SecureCode when making a payment on the internet. You can create this at the moment you want to make your payment and so you do not need to register in advance.
How does MasterCard SecureCode work?
After the card-holder has entered the personal information and confirmed that he or she wants to make a purchase, authorisation is requested by the internet seller. Because you as a card-holder use an extra password, the chance of fraud with your card on the internet is further reduced.
What is my password for MasterCard SecureCode?
You can create your personal MasterCard SecureCode at the moment that you want to make your payment. If you have forgotten your password you can create a new password at www.veiligonlinebetalen.nl. The password that you choose must consist of a minimum of six and a maximum of twelve characters and must contain at least one number and at least one letter. Caution: keep your password secret. The password replaces the signature or PIN.
I have lost my MasterCard SecureCode. What now?
If you have lost or forgotten your MasterCard SecureCode you can create a new password via www.veiligonlinebetalen.nl. The password that you choose must consist of a minimum of six and a maximum of twelve characters and must contain at least one number and at least one letter. Caution: keep your password secret. Can I cancel my MasterCard SecureCode?
More and more companies and customers are using MasterCard SecureCode. Once you have made internet purchases with MasterCard SecureCode you cannot cancel it.
After the notification of the loss or theft of the card and the cancelling of the card, the card will automatically be cancelled for MasterCard SecureCode. If you request or receive a new card, this is automatically registered for MasterCard SecureCode.
How can I see if my internet connection is safe?
The use of 'SSL' (Secure Socket Layer) technology helps to create a secure internet connection. This means that every message between the card-holder and the website is displayed in 'encrypted' form. This prevents third parties from being able to read the message on the internet.
All browsers (software you use to go on the internet) are equipped with SSL. On your screen (bottom left) you can see when this security is in operation. Note in particular:
Microsoft Explorer: the picture of a closed padlock
Netscape Communicator: a complete key.
In addition, the following internet address is displayed at the top of the browser: https://... (note the 's' after 'http'). If this is not the case, the information is not encrypted and you are advised not to pay!
